Fidget Femur

Such a weird design. I have no other explanation.

This fidget femur uses a print-in-place ovoid joint to create and unique tactile movement. This joint type is stronger than the interlocking double ring joints used in many articulated designs, so this design is more suitable for use as a fidget or children’s toy.

Like a “ball and socket” joint, the oval-shaped ovoid from one segment is held in place by a similarly shaped socket in the neighbouring segment. Varying the relative dimensions of the ovoid and socket allows for precise control of the movement between each segment. In this design, lateral side-to-side movement is maximized, but rotation and up/down movement is slightly restricted. 
You may get some small adhesions between segments. Simply apply a bit of force to move the joint the first time, and it will be fine after that.

The models with very thin structures use very little material to print but are delicate and require extra care when printing and processing.

To print, rotate the model 180 degrees upside down so that the top of the skull is oriented to the build plate. The skull is tilted slightly forward to reduce the need for internal supports. If you maintain the forward tilt of the skull you will only need to generate support to the top of the head. The rest of the model will print without the need for supports inside of the skull.

Skull Pop Beads

These “Skull Pop Beads” snap together to form spooky chains or rings as long as you want!

The pieces are designed to be printed in “Vase” or “Spiralized” mode. The file is optimized for printing with a 0.4mm nozzle. Printing with different nozzle sizes is still possible but will affect the tightness of fit.

Each piece uses approximately 0.4g of material, making this a great design to use up the scraps of filament you have lying around! A full 1kg roll could print approximately 2500 beads, enough to make a chain 50m (164ft) long!

To connect pieces together, simply pinch the top end of one piece so that the opening becomes oval-shaped. Insert the oval end of the second piece inside and release. The pieces remain connected but can be separated again if needed. Create long chains or rings by adding as many pieces as you want.

Each piece takes approximately 5 minutes to print. It is, however, much more efficient to print multiple pieces sequentially! Setting up spiralized models to print “one at a time” takes a bit of planning as the pieces must be spaced and sequenced properly so that the hot end or gantry does not collide with the finished prints as it moves on to the next print. 

Make the bottom open by setting “bottom layers” to zero. Good build plate adhesion is essential, so ensure that your machine is well calibrated.
