Chic Beak face mask, by Perihelion Prints

This unique "chic beak" mask offers a minimalist, architectural take on the classic plague doctor mask.

The plague doctor mask began its rise to prominence and infamy in 17th century Europe. It is unclear exactly when the full beak mask came to be, but they were popularized as an early form of protective equipment by the eccentric French royal physician, Charles de Lorme. The plague doctor was also a recurring character in Italian theatre, whose presence personified the fear of death and disease. To this day, the beaked mask remains a mysterious article, full of personality and symbolism.

This modern half-face interpretation is a versatile fashion accessory, suitable for parties, masquerade balls, cosplay, or as part of a performance costume. It can also be used as a stylish cover for a disposable face mask.

The nose cavity is large enough to hold something sweet-smelling. Although it will not protect you from "bad air" as was the medieval theory, there's nothing stopping you from putting something like a sprig of lavender, dried flowers, or a drop of peppermint oil for aromatherapeutic purposes.

For attachment to your face, you will need a bit of cord/ribbon. Ideally, you could cannibalize the straps from a disposable face mask. Hot glue works well to attach the straps to the mask. You may not need that much length on the ear loops, since the sides of the mask will be close to your ears. Refer to the reference pictures.

Alternative solutions include pieces of ribbon that tie behind your head or wearing a disposable face mask underneath the beak mask, passing its straps through the holes in the beak mask.

Scaled to fit most adult heads.

You may want to scale the mask down by 5-10% (in all dimensions) depending on the size of your head. In addition, if your face is narrow, you may want to scale a bit more in the X axis.

Be prepared to do a test print to check the fit, especially around your nose and ears. Compatibility with glasses and/or disposable face masks is not guaranteed on your first attempt, but may be possible with proper scaling.

Sculpted in Blender. STL and .blend files included. Dimensions in millimetres.

======

0.20mm layer height recommended.

Use supports where appropriate - organic supports recommended as they are generally easier to remove. Brim also recommended. Experiment with the orientation to minimize the amount of support material required.

15% infill tested. PLA recommended.

Filament Usage (estimated): 70g

Printing Time (estimated): 3h45m

^ Estimates based off slicing for Prusa MK3.9. Your mileage may vary.

If you find the mask is too thin, you can edit the Blender file to increase its thickness (look for the "Solidify Modifier"). And feel free to reach out with any questions.
