This is a model of the Tower of the Americas in downtown San Antonio, TX. This was designed by my son for a school project using Tinkercad, visually copying the tower from photos (so don't expect high accuracy), and then cleaned up/edited a bit by me to prepare for 3D printing. It's a good toy/art piece for kids.

I left the model as once piece, but when printing I split it apart in the slicer and added some color changes. If you do the top as a separate piece you won't need supports. I'll post the photo once printing is done.

Tower of the Americas

My office chair has legs made of plastic which has broken numerous times in the walls around the shaft of the wheels. I designed this brace to fill the gaps around the shaft as a repair for broken shafts and reinforcement for those not yet broken. It was designed specifically for my model of office chair, but it may fit others. Compare visually and you could maybe print a test piece to see if fits yours.

Print with strong settings (more walls, more top/bottom layers, more infill, higher temperature, shorter layers, wider extrusion width, slower speed, etc etc). I printed on it's side (as pictured in orange) so that the "spokes" would be stronger with just enough snug supports to achieve decent bridging. It doesn't have to look perfect, just be strong. I also lowered the model a bit on the plate to get better adhesion which gave it a flat side, which is fine.

I used plain-old PLA (Tangled's "Pretty-Good" PLA black) as I have a lot of it and PLA does good enough bridging. While we want strength, most of the stress is compressive, so it doesn't have to be steel strength. If you use PLA+ or something stronger like PETG, just be mindful of the bridges.

To install as remove the wheel and check orientation as there is an circle cutout that matches an extra mold mark it fits around. Rotate to match and slide the brace in, then replace the wheel. This should be good enough for ones that have not broken yet, but a few drops of glue/epoxy wouldn't hurt especially around the base of the spokes, just keep it off the wheel itself. If already broken you will want to check to see if any pieces of the original shaft walls remain and can be glued back in place before installing the brace. On mine a large piece was missing, so instead of using glue I used 2-part epoxy-putty so I could shape it to fill the space where the missing piece was.

The included .blend file has two previous versions with worse tolerances and missing an additional hole in the base which gives better fit, but I left them in the file in case it assists anyone with further modifications.

I loaded the above step file into Meshlab, resaved as STL, then modified in Blender (yeah, I know, no longer the preferred step file but on my OS/system and with my skills that worked best. Get over it, I'm a no pro).
For modification I stretched the height to fit my thermal roll and then added side cutouts to hold the axel. This perfectly fits the 473 count 4x4.5" thermal roll from UPS online supply store, listed as "Direct Thermal 4X4.50 Label". I plan on maxing a bigger version for the 4"x6" 940-count roll later.
I thickened the walls to prevent flexing. I also added a slot to pass the labels through with a pointed ridge to try to allow for easy tearing, but it doesn't quite work the way I had hoped so just use two hands to tear the label sheets. Try to not let the remainder fall within the box.

The modifications were inspired by this model (although I did not use any of it's files/models in my model so it's not technically a remix).

The axle is just a couple cylinders bool'd together with bevels added in blender.

For the lid (model not included) I just shrunk a magnetic stackable baseplate and added some cutouts to make it use less filament. Really, any 3x3 Gridfinity bottom will work as a lid, so use what you prefer or go without a lid. I may post this modified lid/baseplate later, but it is so thin it flexes more than I had anticipated so I'll probably thicken it first if I do post it.

In the photos, it is not intended to be multi-color but I was using up the last of some old ugly seldom used rolls none of which had enough on their own to do a complete print.


Ideas for future improvements/remixes by myself or anyone willing to take a stab at it:

- Reshape and possibly reposition the slot to allow easier tearing and reduce the chance that the remainder will retreat back into the box.

- Create more axles that allow for different hub diameters of various label rolls.

- Thicken walls further, at least under the cutouts, to reduce flexing so as the roll's axle does not fall into the box.

- Create a better lid, or just forget it and let the user figure out a different baseplate or lid to use.

- Reshape the axle to allow for vase-mode printing.

Gridfinity 4" Thermal Label Dispenser

Changes from the original:

 - Split into two models for easier slicer arrangement.
 - Re-scaled to properly fit 14AWG wire without resizing in slicer.
 - Beveled a few edges to allow for easier handling and assembly when splicing.


To use:

1: Insert your pre-spliced wire into one side of the jig. One side is for 1-to-1 the other is for 1-to-2. It should handle most types of slim splices including crimp and heat-gun-solder types, or just raw hand-soldered wire.
2: Mate the two halves of the jig.
3: Clamp the jig together for stability with any small clamp.
4: Inject 2-4 trigger-presses of hot-glue.
5: Wait for it to cool.
6: Remove from jig and trim excess hot glue.

Your wires should have a somewhat more water-tight seal now as long as the splice stayed centered.

That is in theory how it should work. I will test after I perform my first print.


Printing:

As this will be encountering hot glue I suggest using a filament that handles heat the best. PLA is probably good enough for the temp of most glue guns, but if you have other filaments that are more heat tolerant use that to be sure. Best I have is PETG so I will use that on my test print (I haven't printed it yet).


Suggestions for future remixes:

 - Extend the cavity to add a screw-mounting loop.
 - Add something to help center the splice and reduce the chance of shifting of the wires and splice during handling.
 - Possibly make it more symmetrical to allow for a single model that is just printed twice?
 - Add LEDs and other bling (ok, maybe not)

VESA monitor stand arm with Gridfinity base

This is a mashup of hein's desk clamp and Gridfinity. I replaced the top piece of the clamp with Gridfinity baseplates. I made 2 versions.

The first version is a simple 1U high baseplate with holes for magnets. It is intended to mount directly to the desk as normal but have a Gridfinity top that can sit next to other Gridfinity baseplates. It's a bit thin, so use a strong filament that doesn't bend much and do not use for anything too heavy.

The 2nd version clamps and existing Gridfinity baseplate down the the desk, negating the need for screws or weights, and gives 2 more base squares. This one is 2U high to try to make it a little stronger than the other version, but again don't expect it to perform like steel. V2 of the model attempts to make it slightly thicker at the top joint to reduce flex.

I am including the Blender file I used to aid in further modding.


For attachments and other parts for the clamp please see heins original post. I may add some of the other required parts to this listing later for archival/preservation reasons in the future.
