**History**
The Kubotan keychain was originally based on a small bamboo weapon called a "hashi stick", an invention by Kubota's father, Denjiro. Its popularity grew from 1969 to the 1970s when Kubota, at the request of California State Senator Edward M. Davis then former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, created the weapon and began training female officers in its application. It is often touted as extremely effective in breaking the will of unruly suspects with painful locks and pressure point strikes. Because of this, the Kubotan is also sometimes dubbed the 'instrument of attitude adjustment'.

**Legality** PRINT/CARRY AT YOUR OWN RISK
The Kubotan may appear as an innocuous key fob to the untrained eye. In some jurisdictions, however, it may be recognized and considered an offensive weapon. In the United States, there are few legal restrictions on Kubotans, with the notable exception that they are prohibited as carry-on items for air travelers. Whether a non-spiked Kubotan (i.e., a rod) is classed as an offensive weapon in the United Kingdom depends upon the circumstances of the case and is for a jury to decide.

**Asanoha / Hemp Leaf**
The Asanoha pattern is a traditional Japanese design that geometrically abstracts a hemp leaf. It is based on regular hexagons and is often referred to as “麻の葉” (asa no ha), meaning “hemp leaf” in Japanese. Hemp is known for vitality and vigorous growth without the need for a lot of care. The pattern is believed to have protective qualities, warding off harm or evil spirits. While it has been a common woven pattern since ancient times, it became known as Ichimatsu in the 18th century as the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu liked to use it on his costume hakama. It is presently very popular as the haori worn by Kamado Tanjirō, the main character in the manga/anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, featuring this pattern in green and black. It was also used in the logos for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
