3D Printed Models for Education and Science

Oversized kit for demonstrating molecular structures.

**Options**

_Atoms_

- 1-Bond
- 2-Bond
- 2-Bond Alternate (120 degree offset ports)
- 3-Bond
- 4-Bond
- Hydrogen - A smaller version of the 1-bond atom.

_Bonds_

Bonds come in multiple sizes and two style. Default stems allow atoms to rotate freely. Locked stems prevent atoms from rotating.

- Long Stem
- Medium Stem
- Short Stem
- Mini Stem
- Flex Stem Long
- Flex Stem Short

_Caps_

Caps are used to secure bonds to an atom. Bonds are free to spin after assembly.

- Default - Simplest option
- Split - Tighter grip on bonds, but comes in 2 parts. This is the recommended cap when using flex stems.
- Alt - Use with you own custom bond materials: bungee, rope, etc. 

**Printing**

- All parts can be printed in PLA or PETG, but avoid brittle PLA blends.
- Flex stems are best if printed in PETG or a rigid TPU (95A/98A). If printed in PLA, the flex stems will eventually deform.
- All parts can be printed without supports. However, some sections of the interior threads have significant overhangs that require well-tuned cooling.
- Test print a 4-bond atom, a  default cap, and a short stem to check for proper fitting. If the fitting is too loose, you can get tighter results by adding a very slight fuzzy skin to the relevant surfaces.

**Assembly**

- Slide stem into cap.
- Screw cap into an atom port.
- Repeat to assemble a full molecule.

These “Modular Wire Test Tube Racks” are compatible with standard test tubes and with the “Spiralized Test Tubes” model linked below.

Models are provided for the following test tube sizes: 6ml (75x12mm), 10ml (100x13mm), 19ml (125x16mm), 36ml (150x20mm), and 55ml (150x25mm).

There are “3 Tube” and “5 Tube” version for each size.

To print a complete a rack, you will need to print one “Closed Shelf” and two each of the “Open Shelf” and “Side” files. Print as oriented, avoid using brim. Snap the pieces together as shown in the video with he “Closed Shelf” on the bottom and the “Open Shelves” on the top and middle. The “Side” pieces are compatible with either the “3 Tube” or “5 Tube” shelf versions.

Modular Wire Test Tube Racks

The models feature a special design feature that allows them to print in spiralized mode to optimize optical clarity. With careful printing and a bit of post-processing these test tubes can hold water!

Download includes five standard test tube sizes: 6ml (75x12mm), 10ml (100x13mm), 19ml (125x16mm), 36ml (150x20mm), and 55ml (150x25mm). 

If you were to print a standard test tube shape in spiralized printing, the curvature on the bottom would result in poor layer adhesion, resulting in a weaker print that would not hold water.

If you look closely at these models, you will notice that there are a series of slits in the rim and curved bottom. When sliced in “spiralized mode,” these slits create a toolpath that traces back and forth over itself creating a stronger and more watertight surface than you would get otherwise. 

There are 3 versions of each size. These different versions optimize the toolpath for different nozzle sizes. If you are not getting a good print with one, try a different one.

Print the files in spiralized mode as oriented with the bottom up. Set your “Bottom Layers” to zero and avoid using brim.

The small sizes are more likely to be watertight right off the build plate. In my testing, about 50% of the larger sizes are watertight right off the build plate. There are a few things you can do to make your test tubes watertight.

Decreasing layer height, raising the nozzle temp and increasing the flow rate a bit will result in better layer adhesion with fewer gaps.

The best and most reliable way to ensure watertightness is to apply a thin layer of gap-filling CA glue to the bottom of your finished prints. A well printed and sealed test tube will hold water indefinitely.

These models are designed to print in spiralized mode to work best with your favorite translucent filament.

For the "Bell Jars" and "Round Bottom Flasks" you'll want to turn off bottom layers. The "Bell Jar Base" files print normally with any filament.

Miniature Glassware for Mad Scientist Lab

This collection of atoms uses swivel snaps to connect, forming twistable organic molecules that are fun to play with and can be used as a learning tool to demonstrate the shape and movement of organic molecular structures.

The focus of this set is on the four main organic elements (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen), but with a bit of imagination they can be used to represent other atoms as well.

For the sake of simplicity, this set treats double and single covalent bonds the same. This means that a carbon atom with one double and two single bonds uses the same file as a nitrogen with three single bonds because both atoms are bonded with three others and have a similar trigonal pyramidal shape. You may choose to print them in different colours though.

In order for the atoms to fit together properly, bond angles and relative sizes are approximations.

In this set, carbon and nitrogen are the same size: “large”. Oxygen is “medium”. Hydrogen is “small.” For each atom, you will need to print out one of each for the “male” and “female” sides of the hemisphere, and the appropriate number of “swivel snaps.”
The files are named for their size (small, medium or large), the number of swivel snaps involved (1, 2, 3 or 4), the orientation of the snaps (tetrahedral, trigonal pyramidal, angular or linear),  and the side of hemisphere (male or female).

Here are the files that you will need for each atom:

Carbon (with 4 single bonds): Large 4 Tetrahedral (male and female) and 4 swivel snaps
Carbon (with 1 double, 2 single bonds): Large 3 Trigonal Pyramidal (male and female) and 3 swivel snaps
Nitrogen (with 3 single bonds): Large 3 Trigonal Pyramidal (male and female) and 3 swivel snaps
Nitrogen (with 1 double and 1 single bond): Large 2 Angular (male and female) and 2 swivel snaps
Oxygen (with two single bonds): Medium 2 Linear (male and female) and 2 swivel snaps
Oxygen (with one double bond): Medium 1, no swivel snaps
Hydrogen (with one single bond): Small 1, no swivel snaps

Do not print the "Display Model!"

Be sure to remove all burrs and brims before assembling the pieces. Place the snaps inside the male and female hemispheres and glue them together. CA glue works well.

The tolerance for the snaps is intentionally tight and they will require some force to connect the first few times. After snapping on and off a few times, any imperfections in the interfacing surfaces will be smoothed out and the snaps should remain snug and reliable. If this doesn't work, use a small file or abrasive to smooth out the snap surfaces. (If the snaps are designed to be easy to connect right off the printer, they quickly become loose and non-functional.)

Download includes five standard test tube sizes: 6ml (75x12mm), 10ml (100x13mm), 19ml (125x16mm), 36ml (150x20mm), and 55ml (150x25mm). For each size, files are provided with numbers, with marking only, and plain with no markings.

To print, import the files as is with the open end oriented towards the build plate, raise the model 5-6mm off the build plate, and generate supports to the rim. Printing the file with the open end directly on the build plate will result in a suctioning effect that may damage your FEP and reduce print quality.

Before using these models, ensure that your print material is appropriate to whatever liquid you intend to put in them.

Volcano Design to go with the classic classroom chemistry experiment- the inside is slightly larger than the opening to give slight resistance to the foam escaping. the sides are sculpted to have three deep lava “flows” for a cool visual effect. 

We tested ours and rinsed it clean with warm soapy water without issue.
