This is a model I designed to repair my motorcycle top box. The plastic hook snapped in two because of its age, so I decided to learn how to create parts in FreeCAD, and here we are. I have happily restored my top box with this 3D printed part, with some post-processing that I detail below:
- the 5 holes for the two metal rods came too narrow and the rods wouldn't fit; you can enlarge them a bit on the computer or with a drill
- the 5 holes need some lubrication to work well
- the small hole for one of the two springs didn't come out well with my 3D printer; I drilled it with a small tip; be sure to drill in the central body and not too close to the edge
- the hook may not be very effective, due to swelling of material during 3D printing near sharp edges; I removed material under the hook to make it more effective; also, notice that this hook is straight, while the original piece has a curved edge; I tried to sculpt it with a knife but it's sufficiently effective as it is
Always remember to take photographs of the original disposition of pieces as you disassemble the top box, and store all of them in a dedicated box. Happy repairing and happy motorcycling!
