I love to design and make things that we can use. My goal is commercial-quality, functional and innovative designs that provide utility, solve problems, and improve quality of life. but sometimes also just things that are fun!

I am driven by the virtually unlimited potential of 3D printers to bring ideas to life. I am particularly passionate about:

  • Utility and Functionality: Crafting designs that allow you to do things you couldn’t do before, or can now do more easily or effectively.
  • Quality of Life (QoL) Improvements: Designing tools and aids that simplify tasks, organize spaces, and enhance efficiency.
  • Games and Puzzles: Creating fun and challenging puzzles that leverage the complexity achievable with 3D printing.

I try to test every design I upload on multiple printers and using multiple materials to ensure as best as possible your success when printing my designs.

Fold-a-Ball - A foldable ball that fits in your pocket - Very nice! My first print was high speed, low density and it came out "OK" but two rings broke for lack of support. This one I printed per the instructions (took two hours) and it is just perfect. Now I am wondering if there is a lubricant that can be applied to make it work more smoothly. - 3d model

This is a ball that folds up and fits in your pocket. It is a fun and entertaining general purpose tennis ball sized folding ball.

It is a print-in-place 1-piece ball that folds into a 12mm thick disc. It can be deployed and collapsed quickly and easily. 100% printed - no hardware, fasteners, or adhesives required. No support is required.

This version of my folding ball has a middle core that serves two purposes. First, it increases the overall mass which helps with throwing, and second, it strengthens the ball by creating a cross member in the middle of the deployed ball.

I have posted a "Light" version of the same ball here... https://than.gs/m/1179490

Your material selection and slicer settings will determine how durable and strong the printed ball is. I recommend a durable and flexible material like PETG or something stronger. You will want to print with a minimum of 4 walls and 100% infill.

Safety Note: As with any plastic toy, please supervise children and pets while they’re playing with it! While the ball is durable, it’s still 3D-printed, and material could break off.

Print Settings:

  • Material = I recommend PETG but any material should work.
  • Nozzle = 0.4mm
  • Layer height = 0.2mm
  • Line width = 0.4mm
  • Wall count = 4 (1.6mm)
  • Top and Bottom Layer Count = 5
  • Infill = 100%
  • Ironing = Not required, but can be enabled to improve layer separation after printing
  • Brim = No
  • Support = No

Commercial Licensing is available through my logicalplanet Memberships here on Thangs. I will customize and provide commercial support to members on request.
