Update 2024-10-04: Added universal plate for older phones without macro mode. Focal length is 75mm. Depending on your phone, you may need to use digital zoom in your camera app to fill the frame. Tested with older phones like Samsung S7, iPhone 4S, etc. and works very well. Hole diameter on the plate is 20mm.

Use your smartphone in macro mode with this photo box to take amazing pictures of your coins! No need for editing! The shown coin pictures are directly from the photo box without post production!

As a hobby treasure hunter and professional product photographer I wanted to have an easy and compact setup to be able to photograph coins like in my studio but with no effort. After a few dozen prototypes, the Coin Photo Box for Smartphones was born.

The hole in the interchangeable plate is 43mm x 43mm and I use it with my iPhone 13 Pro (works with and without original Apple iPhone case). It might work with other iPhone models too, I don't know yet. If not I can easily create new plates for other phones if I get the technical data. Your smartphone should be able to focus in macro mode on objects at a distance of 37mm.

Easy assembly, Youtube tutorial: https://youtu.be/WPkth_Wc6ys

  1. Put a coin on the stand and cover it with the photo box
  2. Place light source in front of white diffuser (table lamp, sunlight, flashlight, ...)
  3. Place smartphone on box, activate macro mode and take pictures

For best quality use a flat surface and put a black sheet of paper underneath the photo box to avoid any light spill or glare. I prefer using a 3rd party camera app because there is a dedicated macro mode and I can change the white balance, shutter speed and ISO myself.

The Apple camera app uses lens-shift and sometimes it won't place the coin in the center. If that happens close the app or try switching from photo to video mode and back again. Add enough light so the macro mode is activated automatically.

3MF file is made in Bambu Studio and is optimized for Bambu Lab printers. The light diffuser has a thin layer 0.2mm of white PLA filament the rest is black.
