Haniel - PH06 - Truncated Cuboctahedron
This polyhedron light sculpture is rooted in the truncated cuboctahedron, an Archimedean solid formed from octagonal, hexagonal, and square faces. The geometry gives the object a clear structure: broad octagonal fields, intermediate hexagonal planes, and smaller square faces working together in one balanced body. In this design, that structure is softened by a fine Custom Piranesi surface, creating a sculpture that feels intricate without losing its underlying order.
The surface language comes from a customized Piranesi snowflake motif. Each edge has been tuned toward symmetry, allowing the pattern to feel continuous as it moves across the modules. A secondary shallow relief layer adds another level of detail, echoing the larger motif in a quieter register. This gives the surface a delicate rhythm: not only raised pattern, but smaller intervals of texture that help the eye move from one field to the next.
The custom profile gives the work a distinct character. Publicly, it can be understood as a recessed, faceted divot within the form: an inward-carved gesture that adds variation to the truncated cuboctahedron body. It creates more movement around the center and helps light escape through the patterned geometry. The result is a stronger contrast between open glow, fine relief, and the denser sculptural surfaces.
Light is especially important to this design. It does not only reveal the outer profile; it passes through small openings, glances across shallow details, and softens the stepped Piranesi surface. The sculpture feels visually light, even while the pattern itself is highly detailed. Its glow is open rather than heavy, with brightness gathering in fields and slipping through the edges of the relief.
As a meditative object of reflection, the piece carries its meaning through structure, repetition, and careful balance. It does not make a spiritual claim. Instead, it invites close looking: the viewer can move between the whole polyhedron, the recessed profile, the fine snowflake rhythm, and the small details that hold the surface together. Within the PH language, this design feels like a study in delicacy, symmetry, and light; a precise sculptural form with an unusually fine surface voice.
