Precision Magnetic Stud Finder

A reliable, battery-free solution for finding studs. Designed by a metrologist for professional facility work, this tool uses a powerful 20mm x 40mm neodymium magnet to detect drywall screws with high sensitivity.

Unlike electronic stud finders that can be fickle, this magnetic version provides tactile feedback you can trust. I’ve integrated a small bubble level vial into the base, allowing you to find your stud and mark your vertical or horizontal line in one motion—ideal for gas line brackets, lab shelving, or mounting equipment in controlled environments.

I used a Flashforge Adventure 5M Pro with a 0.6 mm nozzle. I used PETG and added an additional pause for a different color of text on top. Below are the instructions, these are not necessarily mandatory settings, but just what I used. I have also included the original STEP file I created in Plasticity along with an image of a test print I did.

DO NOT INSERT THE BUBBLE LEVEL MID-PRINT

Please Note: While this magnetic level is a highly effective tool, it detects magnetic fasteners (screws/nails) rather than the stud itself. It is not a 100% guarantee of a stud location. Be aware of "false hits" caused by other metal objects behind the wall, such as metal piping, electrical conduit, or brackets. Always use with caution and verify your findings before drilling or mounting equipment.

  • Layer Height: 0.3mm (standard)
  • 3 walls
  • 15% infill

Important: Set a Pause at Height (as seen in the slicer preview) to drop in your magnet before the top layers seal them in. Ensure your magnet is seated flat to avoid the nozzle catching.
