A simple model for assembling an activated carbon filter to an 80mm fan to filter out soldering fumes.

About this model When soldering, it is important to filter the toxic fumes out of the air. A soldering fume extractor is a good way to do this, and the best thing is that you can easily print your own fume extractor. There are already multiple models on the web, but most of them are for 120mm fans. However, I only had an 80mm fan at home so I decided to design this little thing to stick an activated carbon filter to my 80mm fan.

What do you need

  • the two printed parts
  • an 80mm fan (I simply soldered an 80mm PC fan to a 12v power supply)
  • glue (simple model building glue works great with PLA)

How to assemble If you have everything together you can simply glue thetop part onto the bottom part like the picture shows. Now, you can simply clip the fan into the top part. If it doesn't sit tight but keeps falling out all the time you can glue the fan and the top part together. Now, you can put your activated carbon filter in the gap between the top and the bottom part.

Your soldering fume extractor is finished! Note: Make sure that you assemble the fan in the right direction. The fume should first be pulled through the filter.
