What is “Braille Chess” version? Braille chess is a specially adapted version of chess designed for visually impaired players. It follows standard chess rules but includes specific modifications to make the board and pieces identifiable through touch:
- Board Navigation: Dark squares are elevated approximately 4mm higher than light squares, providing a clear tactile distinction for easy identification.
- Piece Recognition: Each chess piece retains its standard design, similar to the Staunton shape, ensuring players can easily differentiate them.
- Side Distinction: Dark pieces feature slight spikes on top, allowing them to be distinguished from light pieces.
- Piece Stability: A peg-and-hole system is used, where each chess piece has a small peg at the bottom that fits into holes on the board, preventing accidental movement.
Print Instructions & Recommendations
- It is highly recommended to clean the build plate with warm water and soap prior to printing to eliminate the potential adhesion problems.
- Support is only required for the pieces in the Braille version. Every other part of the model should be printed without supports.
- STLs for large, mini, and Braille versions, along with 3MF files with optimized settings, are included in the model files.
Assembly Instructions
- Assembly requires no additional tools, materials or post-processing for standard versions. It is a simple print and play model.
- Braille version would only require the removal of the supports for the chess pieces.
- For embedded magnet versions:
-
- Each print profile includes 8 plates. Caps and checker pieces do not have magnet slots and should be printed in all cases. The remaining 6 plates are for the board and pieces, designed for two magnet sizes: 8x2mm and 6x2mm. To ensure compatibility, select and print only two plates, one for the board and one for the pieces, that match your chosen magnet size.
-
- During printing, the profile will pause automatically at the designated layer, allowing you to insert the magnets before resuming. If your nozzle is magnetic, it may pull the magnets out of the slots when printing continues. To prevent this, apply a small amount of glue before resuming to secure the magnets in place.

What sized magnets should I get? Is there a link for the recommended/tested magnets? Also, how do I make it, so the board appears in two colors instead of just a solid color?
Hey! Most people go for 8x2mm magnets for a standard-sized board, while smaller boards work well with 6x2mm magnets. Generally, magnets from most sources will do the job just fine, especially the 8x2mm ones. For coloring the board, you can either download the 3MF file and open or import it into your slicer or use a painting tool with the fill and edge detection feature. Happy printing!
Very nicely done! Beautiful lines and well crafted. I love chess and this is going to be my first printing on my new printer as a beginner 3D printer! This should be interesting! Hopefully, it will all go well! Thank you
Thank you for the kind words! Let me know if I can help you with anything. If you have not started printing yet, I highly recommend printing the standard version. Happy printing!
