These are 100% printable sunglasses, right down to the lenses and hinges - these were created for the #summer contest!

I'll be adding some photos in the community uploads section :)

I took inspiration from car window shades and pinhole glasses and created a mesh-like lens that only allows a limited amount of light in and shades the eyes.

The arms can be attached using just a small piece of filament passed through the hinge which you can then 'rivet' if you want it to be more secure - riveting involves heating the end of the piece of filament (e.g. with a lighter) and then flattening it so it's wider at the end and so will be held in place more securely.

In my experience, they do seem to reduce glare and make it easier to see in bright light. Your eyes focus on where the light is coming from too so your brain just kind of ignores the mesh - I was able to read with them on for example. They have no UV filter though so I doubt they provide adequate protection compared to proper sunglasses and wouldn't suggest using them as an alternative!

  • All pieces can be printed without supports/brims/rafts etc
  • I recommend printing the first layer very slowly as there are a lot of tiny circles involved!
  • If you want to achieve the dual colour look as I have, you will need to print the frame and lenses with a filament change at 1.6mm layer height
  • After printing, you can heat the bridge of the nose and bend slightly to fit the shape of your face better - I just used a hairdryer!
