Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), the 16th U.S. President, is widely revered for leading the nation through the American Civil War and preserving the Union. Born into humble beginnings in a Kentucky log cabin, he was largely self-educated and worked as a lawyer and legislator before ascending to the presidency in 1861.
