Designing Dual Drop: Balancing Art & Function

Designing Dual Drop: Balancing Art & Function

When I set out to create Dual Drop, I wanted more than just a soap holder—I wanted to capture the beauty of water ripples colliding. But turning fluid motion into a printable, functional design wasn’t as easy as I thought!

Challenges & Solutions

🔹 Perfecting the Ripple Effect – I studied how water ripples interact, tweaking the depth and shape until it looked organic while still supporting a bar of soap.

🔹 Preventing Water Buildup – Early versions trapped water, so I fine-tuned drainage hole placement to keep soap dry. Surface tension was trickier than expected!

🔹 Strong, Drill-Free Mounting – I designed a custom-fit wall mount for ultra-strong double-sided tape (holds up to 30 lbs!). This meant users can’t resize the model, but it installs easily without tools.

🔹 Making It Beginner-Friendly – Supports are only needed for a small part of the wall mount receiver. A 3MF file with pre-set settings ensures a smooth, easy print.

Final Thoughts

Dual Drop turned out to be both practical and poetic—a soap holder that reflects how opposing forces create something beautiful. Designing it was a challenge, but totally worth it!
