The fruit bowl story

The fruit bowl story

Dear reader,

here is the short story about my skewer fruit bowls! This series started out in 2020 when i tried to make a bowl with as little material as possible.

With only a Ender 3 available i wanted to design a big bowl - since i needed one. Printing a object this large was not really a option so i had to find something to “enlarge” it. I ended up with these skewers that you use in the kitchen for making barbecue. I bought packs from multiple stores and realized that are all the same size and very widely available. You can get them in most supermarkets and a pack of 50 does not cost more than two dollars or euros.

Getting the assembly done was some wild fusion 360 magic - the hardest part was getting this usable in terms of assembly. It worked just until the last skewer. I tried a lot of different assembly methods until i found one where i only had to add a little extra cut for the last one.

With just a little material and some assembly you get this amazing looking fruit bowl that makes a eye-catching centerpiece of your table.

I value this design a lot because it was my first more complex 3d printing design. It was well received by my very tiny audience at this point and contributed to my first few euros in sales.

After the success of the first bowl i also wanted a smaller one with just one printed part and quick assembly. It looks kind of unstable but can actually hold a lot of fruit without giving in! With today's machinery this is a 20 minute print. You might already have some of these skewers at home - if so i highly recommend giving this a go!

This design got me my first viral video with over 1 Million views. The camera and quality is horrible - it is a nice contrast to the video quility that i am able to produce today.

This is basically the Sand but “what if you turned it around” - this is what happened - knocked it over and realized that this construction also works to elevate a printed bowl!

This is basically a double FIRE bowl or “how big can this get?” This is a piece for those with a lot of room for display.

I hope you like at least one of those and maybe even print some! I gifted some to friends over the years and they have always been well received. A friend of mine managed to leave some oranges in the SUN while going on vacation. The skewers were beyond cleanable. He simple swapped the bad ones out. If you keep some spare ones around that surely help and will give this design a long life time.

Thanks for reading!
