The box IS the stool

The box IS the stool

FREE: My new stool design

I hate folding chairs. They always just fold into some weird shape that you can’t store anywhere. My idea to fix that was to make a tiny box that you can unfold (assemble) into a full-sized stool. When you have more guests over than you have chairs, this is the fix without having to find a space for an odd-shaped folded chair. The box is about 20 x 20 x 20 cm, so it fits even small cupboards!

This project was a wild ride. At first, I spent an eternity prototyping at smaller scale to save on filament. Since this thing has two states, every measurement influenced every other part twice. Which is a nightmare for a CAD assembly. After actually figuring it out I printed two full-scale versions, one in PLA and one in PETG to bring them to Prague!

Prusa invited me to join the Maker fair there with a project. The only requirement was that it could fit in a suitcase, so that was like the perfect fit. I gave the box to quite a few people to try it out on their own without telling them what it is. Everybody figured it out on their own, with no help. Some did so brilliantly fast, for some it took a minute but overall, I would classify the usability as very good.

After spending a full week with Prusa my highlight was to pet the alpacas that they have at their factory. I had such a lovely time and soooo many people tried out the chair. The heaviest person had 160 KG to their name, and it held strong like it was nothing. So I can say with confidence this thing is super stable!
