A safe, easy way to store my Christmas Finials until next Christmas!

After printing a lot of finials this year, I found that they are plenty strong enough to hang from a tree, but placing them at the bottom of a container of ornaments is too much for the glue joint in the middle. I wanted a way to store them safely - and I have a couple dozen of them. So, I designed this storage box that exactly fits all of my 2024 Christmas Finials. If you're wondering why the box is octagonal, it's because that was the only way to get the box to fit on my build plate. My settings produce a box that's strong enough, prints quickly, and only uses about 100g of filament total. You may not care about the filament, but I have about two dozen to print. It adds up fast.

The hexagonal pattern on the lid is NOT part of the geometry of the lid. I achieved it with slicer settings. I used a height range modifier for 0 - 1.4mm to set Top/Bottom Thickness to 0, Perimeters to 10, and added 15% Hexagonal Infill. It was easier than modifying the geometry and ensured it would slice cleanly.

I've provided my PrusaSlicer project files and Prusa MK3S+ GCODE. If you have a different printer and slicer, here are my basic settings for the box:

• Layer height: 0.3mm
• Top/Bottom Thickness: 3
• Shell Thickness: 0.3mm
• Infill: 15% Lightning
• Perimeters: 1 everywhere except the first 1mm and last 20mm, where I used 2 perimeters.

I also adjusted the Top/Bottom and Shell Thickness settings for the first 1mm so the box would just have 2 solid layers. This was mostly to reduce weight and print time.
