The Rail v2

I've had the original Rail mounted in my studio and home for about a year now and while it looks and functions wonderfully, I noticed some room for improvement. So here's version 2!

In the first design, printed set screws held the brackets and attachments to the dowel. Now, the design doesn’t need set screws at all, making it faster to print, easier to install, and cleaner looking.

The top and bottom brackets have closed ends that sandwich the dowel in place, and the sliding dovetail attachment is secured with a small wedge inserted from the bottom.

You'll notice there are two sizes of Sliding Dovetail Attachments. The larger size fits all of my large wall mounted planters as well as the small size if it has the new under-mount drip tray (Example).

If you're using a small size of the original design (Example), use the small Dovetail Attachment.

How to mount to your wall

  1. Slide dovetail attachments onto dowel
  2. Insert wedge into attachments from the bottom. Use a flat head screwdriver to push the wedge all the way in and secure the attachment to the rail
  3. Place top and bottom wall mounts on the ends of the rail
  4. Insert the keyhole markers into the keyhole slots on the top and bottom wall mounts
  5. Firmly press against wall in desired location and the keyhole markers will make an indent where you need to drill
  6. Drill holes using a 3/16" drill bit
  7. Insert wall anchors and screws (#8 - #10 x 1" screws and anchors)
  8. Make sure the screw head is sticking out just far enough to tightly fit in the keyholes. Use the included depth gauge to determine the distance the screw head should be sticking out.
  9. Attach rail to the wall
  10. Slide planters on to attachments

Supports Supports are needed for the flat overhang on the back of the planters

Scaling This cannot be scaled because the keyhole slots are specifically designed for #8 - #10 x 1" screws and anchors.

Orientation

  • Everything prints upright with its flat bottom on the build plate

72 inch dowel stained dark walnut.
Printed these in OVERTURE Easy Rock White PLA (with black liners) and they came out so much nicer than I could have hoped for. I did use a .50 Nozzle with .35 layer heights so I did edit the dovetails a bit just to get the fit looser. I used a 28" long dowel with the 3 pots shown. Overall this is such a nice quality print... hopefully now I can keep the plants alive.
I'm still printing the last few pieces, but wow, JUST WOW. This is by far the best print I've bought or downloaded to-date. The preciseness of everything is exceptional. I'm so grateful to have this print, I'm using it to give gifts this Christmas to family. Keep up the amazing work!
Our printer wasn't big enough to handle the large pot so we used four small. The drip trays for the pots don't fit very well, but I'm using succulents so don't really anticipate a lot of reason to have to be able to pull them out but they sit in their fine. They're just not smooth and they didn't lock in. We used gold simply because my kid had leftover gold filament from printing a crown for Halloween. Thought the walnut dowel would look nice with the gold and I like how it came out.
Loved how this turned out! I printed 3 small pots and 2 large pots.
Great project! I added a mount that uses IKEA TISKEN suction cups to adhere directly to the window. Works great!
Came out pretty good, almost finished. 👌🏻
Used Matte white filament and it looks awesome. Didn't really need to give my wonderful spouse more reasons to buy more plants.

For sure the best design yet. BIg fan of the hidden driptray too!
This is probably my favourite ever print (and I've printed a 6'1" Saturn 5 rocket lol. I've been printing for 7 years, and this is seriously the best. It just works. Everything is designed so well by you, Loftedgoods.

For those in Australia, Bunnings sell the 25.4mm dowel. This is the 1.8m cut in half. Worked perfectly.

Did you use the 3d model to print the 1" dowel or did you buy 2pc of 1"x12" dowel? Thank you.

Those look nice, did you design the wall anchors in the middle of the rail? I've been looking for something similar for a larger rail print I'd like to do.

I downloaded V1, we have to spend a download to get the V2 version? Great product, was just hoping that downloads we have already received we can update.

I'll always update designs if there are small improvements or additions to make it function/print better. This version took a lot of time and testing and I also included a new planter with it. Totally understand where you're coming from but this is a new design from my perspective.

Can you achieve the same finish using PLA with these settings?

Why did you choose the layer height 0.12?

Martin H

that fits well with the fine settings of the fuzzy skin, but 0.16 works too

Hi,

Can you tell me what length dowel you used for your setup. Thanks. Maybe good to also mention the diameter in the description...
