Gift Box Series This is the first gift box in a series of boxes that I’m designing for Christmas this year. All the boxes are similar in size and shape but each one opens differently. If you print one I would love to see it, be sure to post it here or tag me on your socials.

Gift Box #1 This gift box has a little twist! I wanted to design something for Christmas this year that everyone could print for their loved ones to show the amazing ability's of a 3D printer. This is the first in a set of boxes that all have a little trick to open.
To open it just turn the bow, the bow rotates a spur gear which pulls back the catches and unlocks it. The catches are spring loaded so you don’t have to worry about the box opening when you don’t want it to. There is a stop so the bow cannot be over rotated.
Its roughly 100mm x 100m x 80mm tall. The top prints in place as one part, none of the parts require supports. The bow and ribbons are printed separately and glued on. I printed all the parts in the orientation provided. I prefer the vertical orientation for the ribbons for a smoother surface finish. I added helper pads to them to keep them stable during printing. I printed everything at .2 layer heights but the box could definitely be printed at a larger layer height without issue.
I used Gorilla Glue(aff.) for gluing on the ribbons. Put the glue in the middle and let it naturally spread out. If you don’t already own as set of these clamps(aff.) you should pick them up, they really help with gluing the ribbons on.

Ender 3 V2 Monoprice White PLA+ - Every time i attempt to print this lid, regardless of settings the pins end up fused to their slots to the point that they can't be separated. Needs more clearance for the pins.
There is .38mm of clearance there which is actually a lot. I would work on reducing the size of your layer seam or check your extruder calibration.
It would be nice if the ribbons and the bow could be snapped on or use a friction fit. My niece would surely have fun having multiple options to build the box herself using different colored parts.

I've printed the top twice, not sure what I'm doing wrong both sides and springs are loose enough but I can't get the centre to turn (Voron 2.4, eSun PLA+, 0.2mm 15% infill). I've glued the bow down, we will see if I can get it to crack with the additional leverage that will provide.
You can try to put your model in the freezer over night, it will break free much easier when it's cold. I had to do this on my 75% scaled version.
The lid is indeed tricky to get right. I ended up printing this on a raft with no support. Right side up, .2 layer, 20% infl. Great model btw.
Typically with a print-in-place the problem is either; first layer too low, layer change blobs, or over extrusion. Can you tell if its one of these?
Fantastic model! The parts fit really well together. If anyone is having trouble with parts fitting, make sure you calibrate your printer. This is a useful link that walks through doing that. https://help.prusa3d.com/article/d9j1xdg7vj-extrusion-multiplier-calibration
Is it possible that the lid is quite stiff after printing?
The issue here is that you scaled down the model. If you want to scale it down, try using a smaller nozzle size to match. At 75% you should be using .3 nozzle .35 line width.
I downloaded the model two days ago and the spring stiffness is still way to high when printed in regular PLA. I would like it about one fourth of what it is now. Printed it in 75% and 80%, too which didnt make a difference, probably because the leaver is reduced linearly when scaling the model.
I think it depends on the type of filament used. Someone else motioned this so I just uploaded a new top with the spring pressure reduced by 25%.
Oh, one other question. Have you tested scaling this up to larger sizes? I really love the idea of this design, but don't want to waste time/filament on scaling it up to fit a specific gift if you already know that's not going to work :)
I have not tried, it may not scale well. I am working on a couple different sizes in the near future.
Does this need supports for printing?
In the slicer it looks like 2 walls but looking at the print it seems to be a thick wall and a thin one and it measures between 0.9mm and 1.0mm I will report back on the lower tension version when the pretty colored filament arrives and I print a second one.
Glad a .6 nozzle worked out, its optimized for a .4. The only issue I see with a .6 is the spring which is .9mm wide. Not sure how your slicer worked that out.
No supports are required.
